It’s our Day Zero Coverage in zero-degree weather here in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, for Canada Cup 2012, where the finest warriors have gathered in the city’s Chinese Cultural Centre to determine the strongest team in the world. Perhaps the only tournament where the 1v1 accolades take a back seat to team battle, Canada Cup 2012 is generally regarded as the World Cup of the FGC. It’s where players toss their egos aside to represent their country. Players have traveled from America, Japan, Canada, Korea, and the Netherlands for a chance to hear their national anthem while standing atop the winner’s podium.
The favorite team to hoist the trophy is the gang of bandits from Japan, consisting of Mad Catz’ Tokido and Mago, flanked by their Topanga brethren Bonchan, Kazunoko, and Fuudo. All teams will be vying for the grand prize pot of $5,000, but returning home with all that loot will prove a difficult task as the vibe of Canada Cup is eerily similar to Bruce Lee’s Enter the Dragon, with the role of mastermind tournament organizer being played by Lap Chi Duong. As in the classic kung-fu movie, the warriors must overcome temptation by beautiful women, and there is no greater distraction this weekend than the import models from NetCandi.
While it is now an international company with offices in every corner of the globe, the origins of Mad Catz Company share Canadian roots, so this weekend’s Canada Cup is in many ways a grand homecoming as a major sponsor. We’ve braved the elements and risked frostbite to our precious joystick-pressing fingers to bring you live coverage all weekend long at www.madcatz.com where you can experience the action with our exclusive coverage. Get ready to channel your patriotic fervor into Twitch.tv/canadacup and support your home country’s team from the warmth of your very own home. Canada Cup 2012 has officially begun.
